Compare Like With Like
| Path | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic or master technician | Required credentials, difficult diagnostic work, productivity expectations and paid hours |
| Exotic or classic specialist | Actual brand experience and restoration responsibilities, not the value of the customer’s car |
| Diesel technician | The relevant diesel occupation and employer; it is not the same data series as passenger-car service |
| Collision, paint or fabrication specialist | Scope, materials, demonstrated craftsmanship and pay structure |
| Service management | Management duties and incentives; this is not a like-for-like technician wage comparison |
Use the BLS automotive technician profile for the broader occupation. Our classic-car wage guide explains why a broad benchmark does not establish restoration-only pay.
Does Certification Guarantee a Higher Salary?
No particular salary follows automatically from a credential. Ask the employer which certifications are required or rewarded and how pay reviews work. ASE’s automobile test information explains the areas assessed. I-CAR training serves collision-repair roles and should not be treated as a generic master-mechanic qualification.
Customer Labor Rates Are Not Wages
A shop’s billed hourly rate must cover more than technician pay. It cannot support a claim that the employee receives a particular percentage or annual salary. Nor should business revenue be presented as the owner’s take-home income.
Improve Your Position When Comparing Offers
Prepare evidence of work relevant to the role: a documented diagnosis, a measured repair, a fabrication project or a completed restoration. Explain what you did, how you checked it and what you learned.
Ask about guaranteed hours, flat-rate rules where applicable, benefits, tool support, training and the criteria for advancement. Compare the whole offer with the work you want to do. Find current specialty automotive jobs.
