About AutoMat Customizing & Restoration
AutoMat Customizing & Restoration in Hicksville, New York, is a Long Island interior, top and restoration shop at 69 Hazel Street. Eric Browner, a World War II veteran, founded it in 1956, starting in a basement with one cutting table and one sewing machine. His son Glenn joined in the early 1970s and added full interior restoration with in-house installation, and his son Tim joined in the early 1980s. Today the business works out of a secure 12,000-square-foot facility and celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2026. Interiors are the shop's best-known work: custom and restoration interiors, seats and upholstery, door panels, dashes, convertible tops, headliners, carpets, trunks and steering wheels. AutoMat also runs a full in-house classic car mechanical and electrical department. Services there include engine performance and tuning, fuel systems and carburetion, steering, suspension, brakes, heat and A/C, gauges and wiring conversions. The shop says it has worked on all makes of antiques, classics and muscle cars, maintained concours collections and prepared Corvettes for Bloomington and NCRS judging. The current opening is for an experienced classic car mechanic. Projects run from one-day repairs to multi-year frame-off builds, including engine and transmission swaps, disc brake conversions, carburetor rebuilds and wiring harness work. Hours are Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 1.
